friendship day

Friendship Day, a massive air show featuring various static displays of military aircraft, is a joint event between MCAS Iwakuni and Japanese nationals that takes place every May 5th in Iwakuni, Japan. It annually attracts over 20k attendees from all over Japan. In 2019, Friendship Day headlined a race between an Extra 300L aircraft and an Aston Martin Vulcan.

I started working on Friendship Day 2019’s marketing material a year prior to the event. Once the poster was completed, the design elements were applied to flags, merchandise, passes, digital materials, and event signage.

Friendship Day 2019 Poster Design

The poster features an illustration of the C-130 Hercules aircraft. This design was largely influenced by the New York World’s Fair “The World of Tomorrow” poster from 1939 and other posters of that era.
